At this gig, Crass / Dial House were brought to the attention of Zounds by the gig
promoter[04]...
at some point [presumably during the next day], Steve and Lawrence take a tape to Dial House;
Crass agree to release a single. At this point, Crass
had only released a single by Honey Bane and a single and album by Poison Girls other than their own
material. |

3 conspiracy theorists walk into a bar. Coincidence? EXIT was the name of the 1970s avant-garde performance art group that included Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher. This Exit may have been a separate afternoon event and the name a merry coincidence. |

This poster is interesting as it shows the 'Crass' Zounds logo a couple of months before Can't Cheat Karma
was even recorded and probably only a month or so after Steve and Lawrence first met Crass. Design is credited
to Zounds and Eve Libertine on the single. Quick work and what we would now call branding. Larger version here. |

At the 1980 Stonehenge Festival the biker contingent, a mainstay of most UK festivals, took exception
to the number of punk bands and punks on site. During The Epileptics' set cans and bottles were thrown
on stage and some violence erupted and the generator was effectively taken over by the bikers. As a result, Zounds along with the Poison Girls and Crass were prevented from playing. |

European Tour with Cheap 'n' Nasty |
|
Earlier in 1980, probably June, a chance meeting at Dial House between Zounds and members of Dutch group Cheap 'n' Nasty led
to an agreement to tour Europe. Later Steve travelled to Leiden and hung out with Herman from Cheap 'n' Nasty;
between them they organized this tour. More info and photos can be found at the Bacteria website. Have a dig around, there's loads of great info regarding Dutch punk and commentary of this tour. Zounds: Steve Lake, Joseph Porter, Lawrence Wood. Photo credit: Terry of Cheap 'n' Nasty; other posters and most info for this tour courtesy of the great Herman De Tollenaere. |
